Ethel and Ernest (2016)

Sunday 28th January 7pm

The Cock Hotel, Mk11 1AH

Part of StonyWords 2018 23 January 23 – 4 February, with full details at

Ethel and Ernest, is the adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ biographical graphic novel of the same name.

The story is a moving tribute to his parents, and their long happy marriage. Ethel was a lady’s maid and  Ernest a milkman who liked the look of the new Labour Party. They had just one child, Raymond, having bought a terraced south London house in 1930. Ernest is a fireman in the war and then returns to his old life in a rapidly changing world.

The screening will be in two parts. The first, short, part explains how the book has been carefully translated to the screen with interviews with the author, director and an insight into the laborious work of the many animateurs involved. The actors, including Brenda Blethyn, Jim Broadbent, Luke Treadaway, Pam Ferris, Roger Allam and June Brown, are seen providing the voiceovers.

The second part of the screening is the film itself.

Gentle, poignant and vividly animated, Ethel and Ernest is a warm character study with an evocative sense of time and place. Critic consensus Green Tomatoes

The film will be a popular one, so buy your tickets soon from the reception of The Cock Hotel or reserve on
