Graduation (2016)

Stony Scala Film Club first screening of 2018

The Cock Hotel, Stony Stratford, MK11 1AH

Sunday 7th January 2018 at 7pm (doors open 6.30pm).

Dir. Romanian Palme d’Or winner, Cristian Mungiu / 128mins

It stars the Romanian stage and screen actor, Adrian Titieni, as surgeon Dr.Romeo Aldea. He and his wife have returned to Romania, hoping to help rebuild the country, following the end of Ceausescu’s rule. Their disappointment in the slow rate of change means that their hopes become fixed on their bright and hard-working only daughter, who has the chance of a scholarship to an English university if her final high school examination goes well.

Things go badly wrong though, and the family are faced with choices between their ethics and dishonest pragmatism, when planning the future.

The film tells us a lot about Romania but throws a light on more universal public and private family dilemmas.

Graduation is a masterly, complex movie of psychological subtlety and moral weight, about the shabby choices people make as they claw their way up. It is a deeply intelligent film and a picture of a state of national depression in Romania where the 90’s generation hoped they would have the chance to start again. There are superb performances. ***** Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

Scala films in early January are always popular, so we recommend that you buy your tickets early from The Cock Hotel reception, or book on stonyscalafilm@aol.com.
